The RICS was setup as a members organisation originally and can trace its routes back to 1792. It was founded in 1868 gaining Royal Charter in 1881 and has over 140,000 members worldwide. If a company is operating as a firm of Chartered Surveyors, then they must be regulated by the RICS.
There are three levels of membership
Associate Members (AssocRICS)
The Associate members are not full members and therefore cannot call themselves Chartered Surveyors. They will specialise in certain areas of Surveying rather than the broad areas covered by MRICS or FRICS members. To become AssocRICS they must have 4 years of relevant experience, which opens the door to professional from differing backgrounds to join and can be used as a pathway to full membership.
Chartered Surveyors (MRICS)
A full member of the RICS (MRICS) who can referred to as a Chartered Surveyors. They will have worked through a rigorous route to professional membership have gained both academic and professional experience in a broad range of surveying areas. This is considered to the ‘Gold Standard’ in surveying with the candidate having to have passed their Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) including an hour long presentation and interview.
Fellow of the RICS (FRICS)
Is a senior Level position obtained after several years’ experience as well as involvement in the RICS and training or other surveyors.
When selecting a surveyor, it is important to ensure that the person is appropriately qualified and has sufficient experience to provide you with the level of service and professionalism that is required.
The Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors formed following the introduction of the Party Wall etc Act 1996 in 1997. The faculty provides education and support for members and professionals. Our surveyors are members of the faculty (MFPWS) and have demonstrated the skills and understanding to administer the Act.
The learned society was formed in 1974 and played a pivotal role in the framing of the Party Wall etc Act 1996. Our Chartered Surveyors are members of the society which provides training and education to Party Wall Surveyors.
